When Your Words Become a Weapon
by Terence Mills
Scripture
“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.” — Exodus 20:16, KJV
Sometimes we treat a lie like it ends when we finish saying it. But words travel. They enter conversations we will never hear, influence people we may never meet, and leave someone defending themselves against something they never did.
That is why God takes false witness seriously. There is a person attached to the story. A name. A family. A life.
In 1 Kings 21, King Ahab wanted Naboth’s vineyard. When Naboth refused to surrender his family inheritance, Jezebel arranged for false witnesses to accuse him of wrongdoing. Their accusations led to Naboth’s death, and Ahab took possession of the vineyard.
They used a lie to get what they wanted. But God saw what happened, and He sent Elijah to confront Ahab.
People can agree on a false story, but their agreement does not make it true. God still knows what happened.
We may never stand in a courtroom and give false testimony, but we can still misuse our words. We can leave out details that would change how someone understands a situation. We can repeat an accusation we have never verified. We can exaggerate someone’s behavior because we want others to justify our anger.
Being hurt does not give us permission to become dishonest.
Before we ask God to expose someone else’s lies, we need to let Him examine our own words. Have I told the truth completely? Have I corrected what I discovered was false? Have I allowed someone to believe something untrue because it benefited me?
Repentance means being willing to say, “What I told you was wrong. I need to correct it.” That may cost us pride, but allowing the lie to continue costs someone else.
And if you are the person being lied about, Jesus understands false accusations. You can speak truth, seek support, and establish boundaries without answering dishonesty with dishonesty. You do not have to surrender your integrity to defend your name.
Reflection
Is there anything I have said—or allowed others to believe—that I need to make right?
Prayer
Father, search my heart and examine my words. Forgive me for every lie, exaggeration, and careless accusation. Give me the courage to correct what I have damaged. When others speak falsely about me, help me respond with wisdom and truth. Keep bitterness from directing my mouth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today’s Action
Correct one false statement you have shared. If you cannot verify a story about someone, stop passing it along.
Takeaway
Protecting your image is never worth sacrificing your integrity or someone else’s name.
